National Powwow Takes Local Stage This Weekend

The National Powwow XVI will be taking place at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in Danville this weekend. From July 3 through July 6, this celebration of American Indian culture will be shared with over 2,000 visitors.

American-Indians-Dancers-permission_optThe National Powwow has taken place every three years since 1969, and it was last in Hendricks county in 2011. Activities taking place over the course of the festival include traditional dances, a living history tipi village and the National Powwow Princess contest.

Visitors will be able to see the many different styles of dancing, clothing, and craft among unique American Indian groups. Visitors are invited to greet the participants as the encounter each other, and ask questions about what’s happening. The tipi village will be open at select times for visitors see what tipi life is like. Educational seminars will be held throughout the weekend, and will provide insight into a variety of topics- see the link below for a complete schedule. Participants come from all over the United States and Canada, so many American Indian groups will be represented.

Activities for children will take place throughout the weekend, including a special children’s powwow, led by child dancers. The storytellers, magicians and birds of prey shows are appropriate for all ages. My family is looking forward to attending; after trips to the Eiteljorg Museum, they are eager to learn more about American Indian culture. I’m not telling them, but in addition to being fun, it will be educational too (see more ways to fight summer brain drain all around Indianapolis here ).
